Mulder and Scully Were Busy

Davenport, Maine. It was a fairly typical little tourist town, full of cottages and quaint B&Bs and little shops claiming to be "general stores" that sold absolutely nothing practical. It was also currently very, very quiet. Sure, there were plenty of locals puttering about, but the sudden decline in tourism had taken its toll on the town's moral.

Sight of the SHIELD agents (who were there under the guise of- surprise surprise- tourists) seem to perk many of them out of their funk though. People were helpful. Almost too helpful. Groceries were bagged quickly and neatly, food was served hot and fresh at the local eateries, and there were chocolate mints on each frilly-cased pillow at the bed and breakfast they were staying at. The people here were oh-so-eager to please the first tourists they'd seen in at least a week.

The agents had checked into their reserved B&B suites, two to a room without complication. The rooms were... typical B&B fair. Lots of "shabby chic" floral and toile prints and the promise of blueberry buttermilk pancakes in the morning.

If the garish decor was not enough to frighten our heroes, perhaps the strange sounds and lights that began sometime around one AM would do the trick?

Natasha had been awake when the lights started and had been reading the reports about the disappearances. Not that there was much to read. Nick had given her all that SHIELD had, which wasn't much, and the rest was up to her and her team to fill in the blanks.

She was sharing a suite with Steve. She almost gave into the temptation of sharing a suite with Matt, but this was work and she didn't trust herself. Time for playing would come later.

When the lights started, she dropped the report and hurried to Steve's bedroom door. She knocked. "C'mon, Rogers. Time to go work."
Steve was just about to open the door and come out when Natasha knocked. He was dressed casually by his standards - button-down shirt and slacks. "Looks like we're up." he said calmly.

Sleep hadn't come easily for Agent Murdock as he found himself laying awake in bed. Perhaps not surprisingly, thoughts of another agent were preventing him from falling into the soft embrace of slumber. Some part of him had hoped that Agent Romanova would have elected to share a suite with him - no such luck. The decision made sense, however, particularly in light of their conversation just prior to the briefing.

'We need to be agents first,' she'd said.

But since that all too brief conversation in his quarters, he hasn't heard so much as a smile in her voice directed to him. And to make matters worse, she had paired with Captain Rogers.

The sounds of Natasha stirring down the hall and the eerie noises coming from outside shook Murdock out of his mood. Moving away from his bed, he went to Agent Starsmore's room and knocked. "That's our cue, Starsmore."
Thankfully, Jono didn't have to sleep very much. On the one hand, it was a pain to be awake in the middle of the night when nobody else was up and around. On the other hand? A quick nap early in the evening meant that he was ready for anything that happened that night.

He had his headphones on, listening to music when things got started. So he missed the sounds at first, but the lights were enough to get his attention. He turned the mp3 player off and was pulling off his headphones when the knock at the door came. Yeah, roight. Jus' a mo. Jono swung off the bed, grabbing his shirt and pulling it on as he made his way to the door. Best make our way outside to meet Romanoff an' Rogers.

With her arm still wrapped around Steve's, Natasha spotted Murdock and Starsmore in the hall. At least she didn't have to waste time waking them up and waiting for them to get ready.

"We were just coming to get you two. Looks like we get to go have some fun." A small smile stretched her mouth. Work always made her smile.
Steve was far less cheered by the notion. He had his Game Face on, which to those who didn't know him well (which was just about everyone) looked like vague boredom.

Inside, though, he was looking to get down to the bottom of things.

Things were very quiet. There were no crickets chirping or frogs croaking. The night was still, devoid of any breeze.

Even on the mental plane, there was no noise. The background noise of active and dreaming minds was now gone, leaving nothing but silence beyond the minds of the SHIELD agents.
Once they were outside, Natasha took a few second to look around. The lights had vanished and had left darkness in their wake.

The weird part was that it was totally silent. Not even a cricket chirp or the sound of a tree frog. This was weird and Natasha hated weird.

"Let's do a quick search of the area. I'm going north. Rogers you go east. Murdock south and Starsmore west. Stay on comms and be back here in ten minutes."

First there was the light. Then nothing. For several long moments, a feeling akin to being underwater. And then, a fall of a few feet, depositing her on a forest floor, not entirely unlike the wilderness she'd been in previously.

Of course, there was something strange about this little patch of the outdoors. The air was slightly stuffy, and a little too warm, almost as if she weren't outdoors at all. But would she notice, with the sounds of approaching animals? Scratching, growling beasts with glowing red eyes that look as if they stepped out of a child's nightmare.
Natasha opened an eye and then the other one. She felt like she had been run over by a train or a bus, take your pick, and knew that something had knocked her out. She was still in the forest, but it didn't feel the same.

Natasha figured she couldn't have been out for long. The team was supposed to meet in ten minutes and if it had been longer than that they would've been here by now.

Slowly she climbed to her feet, her legs a little wobbly and her head pounding. Someone was going to pay for this, she decided.

"Rogers? Starsmore? Murdock?" she called into her comm unit. Static answered her.

The sounds of something approaching reached her ears and she readied her Widow's Bite. It never hurt to be cautious.

The night surrounding Steve Rogers was still and eerily quiet. A flash of light turned night into day for a brief moment and a blast of energy went shooting toward the back of one Captain America.
Steve rolled and twisted, to try to get out of the beam path and to deflect what he could with his shield.

Steve came back to consciousness with an entire squad of hauptmann Nazis with flamethrowers set to a slow burn marching back and forth behind his eyes.

It also appeared that he was behind the wheel of some kind of car. And instead of his casual clothes he was dressed in some kind of bulky jacket, jeans, and a T-shirt. With a pack of cigarettes rolled up into one sleeve.

Steve didn't smoke.

What the hell was going on?

In the darkness surrounding him, eyes glowed red and slowly approached.

Starsmore hadn't been the only one who had become irked at Rogers' apparent need to take charge of a situation. Still, Murdock did what he could to push aside the annoyance he felt - it wasn't doing anything to help him, and it wasn't doing anything to help Agent Romanova.

He had stood in the hotel lobby for the last several minutes, pacing back and forth, occasionally trying to hail the Carrier, each time only receiving dense, hard static. Murdock paused at the mantle of the fireplace, resting one hand on the mantle, drumming his fingertips on the wooden shelf. Nothing from Rogers, and he wasn't sure where Starsmore had disappeared to.

Rogers' orders - such as they were - had been to reconnoiter back to the hotel, then wait for him to return. If they didn't hear anything, they were to figure out a way to get in contact with the Carrier and head topside. Too bad something's interfering with our communications equipment... Murdock thought, frowning.

Blowing out a long breath, he stepped away from the mantle, then went to the front door, placing his hand on the knob. No change - there were no discernible sounds from the other side of the door. Turning the knob, he stepped outside into the warm night air.

"Where the hell are you?" he murmured.
They had been tracking their quarry since the moment they arrived in the town. It had been a matter of waiting until the right moment to strike. Now it was time to take another one.

There was a bright flash of light in the darkness off to Matt's right and a bolt of energy shot out from the center of the light.

Jono was trying to stick close to the hotel. Mostly because it was a good place to coordinate from.

He'd actually circled around to the back of the hotel, which was why he didn't hear Murdock calling for him at first. And even if he head heard him, there was no telling what Jono would have said. He was just wound that tightly.

The moment he felt Rogers disappear, Jono whipped around, cursing to himself. They needed reinforcements and fast.
Reinforcements were coming, but not for the SHIELD agent. There was a flash of light in the darkness close to him and a bolt of energy shot out of it. It was heading directly for Agent Starsmore.

They walked for about fifteen or twenty minutes before they caught sight of a flash of light up ahead and the sound of one of the "dog" yowling in pain. Natasha double checked her bracers and made sure they were on the highest setting. If they were heading into combat, she wanted to be ready.
Steve didn't make any external sign that he was readying himself but he was mentally prepping for some action.

He had to admit it'd feel really good to work out a little frustration on some bad guy somewhere.

At the light and sound ahead, Shatterstar started into loping steps as he drew both swords out. That yowl was familiar. The man and woman behind him would follow or they would not. It did not seem to matter as the Mojoworlder started jogging faster. He was heading straight for the action.

Whatever they were, they were gone, and in their wake they'd left a bruised - but not broken - blind agent. Panting heavily, his knuckles, arms, and shoulders aching, Murdock staggered backward, slumping against a nearby tree, trying to catch his breath.

What remained of the sweater that had been tied around his sweater was scattered on the ground around him, and Matt bore a ragged slash - obviously from something with claws - along his right shoulder. The howls and shrieks had finally receded into the darkness, and the loudest sound in Murdock could hear was that of blood rushing through his ears.

Bringing a hand up to his face, he straightened, stepped forward, then staggered again, retreating back to the stability of the tree. Just a few minutes... just to catch my breath... he thought.
Shatterstar lead the other agents through the artificial terrain of the studio. He was heading toward the slave pits by way of one more spot in the studio. The Mojoworlder had a good idea of how good of a cinematic spot it was. His swords had not been sheathed and he moved through the trees with an almost effortless quietness.

The battle needed to be loud and bloody, not the entrance to it. He spotted a form that did not belong as part of a tree and stopped. He gestured for Romanova, Rogers, and the telepath to head toward it.

The Mojoworlder angled his own path to the right, wary of any further attacks.

Elongated yellow fingers steepled for a moment as one spidery leg tapped impatiently on the control room floor. His stars were determined to make the audience fall asleep with all that cautious standing and looking around.

So, one greenish-yellow hand moved over to a dial and turned it up to eleven. Ten just wasn't exciting enough in the cavernous studio. The other hand reached through the darkness to grab a cylinder with a small bell-shaped cone attached.

His trademark police knew the signal to come running. Mojo pressed the button for the small microphone in front of him. This action piece needed a good blast to start them off.

So, he blew the airhorn into the microphone to send the studio he watched shaking from the noise.
The quiet was shattered by what sounded like an air horn. "What the hell?" Natasha growled, looking around for any sign of movement. Most likely it was a signal for something. She didn't want to know what that something was.
